2017 Raleigh Record Ace

Raleigh's Record Ace is all the motivation you need to get out and ride. If you're skeptical, just take a look at the classic lines of the Reynolds 631 steel frame and fork, and try to resist the urge to rush out the door and get rolling. A comfortable, responsive ride awaits, after all, and it only gets smoother zooming on tough Weinmann wheels wrapped in Kenda rubber. Now that you're out and rolling, how about picking up some speed?     Steel is Real!

      The defining factor of the Raleigh Record Ace is steel. Steel is real, or so they tell me. Aluminum, titanium, carbon fiber, they all have their perks. However there is just something about a classic steel ride. Steel is still the yardstick against which all other materials are measured. Modern steel is strong, smooth, and light. It often seems with every technical innovation there are new drawbacks that come with it. Steel suffers none of these drawbacks, it is old faithful and companies like Reynolds have honed their steel tubing to amazing levels. Perhaps all things that are old are new, maybe the lugs wooed me, whatever the reason, when I saw Raleigh was offering a classically lugged steel road bike with Ultegra for a reasonable price I had to have one. The new Ultegra is fantastic. Compared with the nine speed Dura-Ace I was riding before the Ultegra is a dream. The shifting is incredibly crisp and fast. Shimano's front trim adjustment is head and shoulders above the competition. The new shape of the brake hoods is ergonomic genius. Routing all the cables under the bar tape is a great update. I like it! I am by no means a pro-racer so was wary at first of the cranks not being compact. However, my first week with the bike I summited Thunder Ridge, and while the Blue Ridge Parkway is always hard, I found it was easier than expected. I also appreciated the smoother shifting of the traditional gearing. While a 16 tooth jump is possible for a compact crank, it's not always smooth. I'm never a fan of in between bikes. I always find that bikes designed to do two disciplines don't do either well. That being said, this is an all-around geometry I'm loving. It's not a touring bike, and it's not a twitchy sprinters bike, I guess you could call this a club ride bike. Sprinting out of the saddle isn't as the same as an aggressive carbon sprint bike, but I can hold my own on the group ride stop sign sprints. Even with that capability I can ride all day and not pay for it later with a stiff back. It's comfortable, fairly upright, and fast. It's a true all-arounder of a road bike. The lugged fork is amazingly supple over chipseal roads. It is something I've forgotten with the recent years of straight blade forks. My favorite perk of the bike is the second looks it gets and the conversations it starts. The all white paint paired with the lugs is an incredibly clean look. The leather Brooks saddle and leather bartape paired with the lugged fork offsetting the modern parts is just not something one sees. The classic contrasting the modern goes perfectly with the quick yet comfortable geometry. It really stands out in a group. Raleigh did the storied name of Record Ace justice with this bike. It will be a very long time before I'm willing to part with this bike.
